If you're like most players, you're always on the lookout for a quick and easy way to cut strokes off your score. Well, I'm simply about to show you a really simple thing you can do to do simply that. Discover how to regrip your golf clubs!
I'll explain why in a second but 1st allow me to introduce myself... I've been playing golf since I was 2 years old. I'm 44 now so I guess you could say I cognize which end of the club to hold on to at any rate. That's me in the picture, aged 7, setting up to play a 7-iron on the 9th green of our local club (with no grip on the club, note!). My brother Finbarr has the putter in his hands so clearly he knew more simply about golf than I did at that stage, even as if he didn't cognize more simply about caddying or etiquette...
Anyway, despite these early shortcomings I improved and in 1979 I was privileged to represent Ireland as a junior player alongside, amongst others, Ronan Rafferty and Duke of edinburgh Walton, several of whom went on to be booming on the European Tour and represent Europe in the Ryder Cup. As for myself, unluckily I had to give up competitive seriously because of study and activity commitments, but I still love the game and still play to a handicap of 5.
Now let me get right to the point...
Recently an ad has been running on TV in which the Golf Pride Grip Institution claims you can save four strokes per round by re-gripping your clubs with Golf Pride grips. Now, that's not me expression this, it's Golf Pride, and I don't cognize what evidence they have to prove it. But I do cognize from my own experience that worn, hard and shiny grips are one of the most important causes of bad golf shots - and that even as nice shots ne'er
feel quite right once
your grips are worn. Indeed, once
you consider that it only takes one bad swing to hit the ball out of bounds or into a water hazard or lose it in the deep rough, it's probably safe to assume that, any simply about saving four strokes, you should surely be able to save two shots a round by always having your grips in top condition. And if that's true, then remember that that's two strokes saved without ever having to re-build your swing, go to the gym, hire a hypnotist, employ a psychologist, consult a psychiatrist, switch to the long putter or take out a mortgage to buy a new driver!
We've all compete with worn grips at several stage and you mightiness be doing so right now, so think for a moment simply about what happens once
it rains or the weather gets cold, or once
it's hot and sticky. You're baby-faced with a driving down a narrow tree-lined fairway or possibly a long iron from a tight lie to an elevated green. The club starts back and all is well until somewhere on the way to the top your hands lose control and the club 'gets lost'. Now that vital ''message' that signals the end of the backswing and the beginning of the downswing is missing from your hands. What happens next? You've got to try to re-grip or 'find' the club on the way down in order to re-gain control. But the effort and the countervailing moves your body is forced to do rob you of your rhythm and temporal arrangement and cost you golf-club head speed and accuracy. The results? Fat shots, thin shots, hooks, slices, shanks - not to mention stinging wrists and fingers! Clearly you cannot play the game to your better under those circumstances, nor can you get more enjoyment from it.
And this isn't simply a problem in bad weather or simply for the longer clubs. Pitching, chipping, putt - all the feel shots -are affected by bad grips. Plus once
your grips are in bad condition, even as in perfect weather you'll lose several of that feedback you depend on for telling you how you've smitten the ball - feedback that's perfectly vital for your confidence and for ironing out your faults, whether on the course itself or on the range.
So, all in all, playing golf with bad grips is a real struggle, it's vastly
frustrating, and it takes a lot of the fun out of the game.
Yet despite this, galore golfers have no idea how important it is to support their grips in nice condition. After playing in the rain they leave their clubs soaking wet in the boot of the car. They damage the grips piece taking their clubs out of the bag and putt them back in again. They ne'er
wash them so oil and dirt accumulate on them. And once
they do need to be replaced it's either too more bother to go to the pro shop, too expensive, or they feel they can't wait for the time it would-be take to do the job because they need their clubs the next day. So months (sometimes even as years) go by and they continue to leak shots - and wonder why!
I used to be like that too. Wherever
I grew up we ne'er
had a golf professional, so I went for years without ever having a grip changed. Later on, once
I did have access to a professional golf shop near wherever
I lived, it used to take days to get a club re-gripped - and they used to charge an arm and a leg for it! So it was thing
I ne'er
actually daunted with, and as a consequence I was always troubled
to hold onto the club. I admired practicing, but whenever it rained my practice became counter-productive. And during the winter once
all grips tend to become slick and lose their cheapness because of the cold the lack of feel I had through my grips ready-made it difficult to play to the better of my ability.
The turning point for me came a few years ago once
a friend and I started devising clubs for the 1st time. We had been having trouble acquiring the right flight on our drives because our driver shafts were too flexible, so we started collection our own drivers and experimenting with stiffer shafts. Naturally one of the things we had to do was discover how to put the grips on. Being forced to do it for ourselves blew away all the mystery. I couldn't believe thing
could be so simple! Yet there was still a tremendous sense of accomplishment because a club with a new grip feels like a brand new club and I couldn't wait to hit it! Ever since then I've done all my own re-gripping, so now, instead of dreading the rain I enjoy playing in it, and even as in the wettest conditions I can rip down into the ball with confidence instead of simply hanging on.
Just simply about a year ago I accomplished that re-gripping golf clubs is so easy and requires so little in the way of specialised instrumentality that every golf player in the earth should be able to do it for themselves. Yet really few can! So I distinct to create a instructions to show golfers how to do it.
